Flavor of the Week-Beco Baby Carrier

Melissa, April 5, 2010

When the weaner was born I had a Sling, Baby Bjorn and hiking backpack.  I wish I would have found this baby carrier about 7 months earlier!  It replaced all three of my carriers!!  I love this thing.  We have used it everywhere for two months now.  And even better, the weaner loves it too! Over the holidays we jetted out of our snow filled city down to California.  I brought the stroller but barely used it because we had the weaner in the backpack the entire time!  She even had her naps in there if we were out sightseeing.  It works on the front and the back. Currently I carry my hefty 18 month old in mine and I can carry her for hours (yes hours, she is a bit needy:)) without it bothering my back! And it is beautiful to boot! I purchased mine at www.babybot.com.

Peas, Carrots, Rice and Chemicals

Melissa, March 25, 2010

Isn’t it great when you grow your own veggies cook up an amazing stir fry and find you have some left over for the next day?  Depending on what you store your leftovers in you may be adding some unwanted chemicals into that amazing (and once healthy) stir fry. BPA is probably the most unpopular chemical involuntarily added into our food from containers.  Read my other post on Canada’s BPA ban to learn a bit more about that.  Obviously Wean Green has done their homework on the importance of not storing food in plastics!  Although we only carry the one size of glass container I do encourage you and your family to use your plastic food containers to store non-food items and replace them with glass.  You can purchase glass containers almost anywhere you can purchase plastic ones! A couple of things to look for when you are purchasing glass food containers: –          Tempered glass- this ensures that you can reheat your leftovers without the glass exploding.  It also allows you to freeze the glass with no consequence –          BPA free lids and silicone seals- your food will still come into some contact with the lids so ensure you are protected against this nasty chemical! –          Microwave safe lids only mean that the lid will not melt in the microwave, this does not mean that if you place the lid in the microwave that it will not leach any chemicals into your food.  BPA is not the only chemical found in plastic! Don’t microwave the lid! –          Glass is breakable, always read the warnings and care instructions with your containers.

Don’t Forget Earth Hour: 8:30pm Saturday March 27th!

Melissa, March 24, 2010

What are your plans for Earth Hour this year? Last year the weaners were thrilled to have a nice candlit dinner of cold foods.  This year I am hoping we can take it outside and roast some hot dogs with the neighbors and their weaners.  I would love to hear how you are planning on spending your earth hour! Instead of just doing an earth ‘hour’ why don’t you plan an earth night! This way you can involve the weaners!!

Flavor of the Week-Rickshaw Bottle Bank Baby Bag

Melissa, March 15, 2010

Don’t you just hate to look outside on garbage day or recycling day and see just how much we don’t need every week? I do!  I am always thinking of innovative ways to reuse anything before it ends up on the street corner.  Rickshaw Bagworks has taken some of our post-consumer wastes and used them to accentuate this beautiful diaper bag.  Diaper bags are an ingenious invention as it stands and we all know that I like my diaper bags to add a little flare to my ensemble (a pretty diaper bag really brings out the black in my jogging pants LOL!) so this one tops my pile. The exterior of the bag is made from 100% recycled beverage bottles!  Really, what a great idea!  Not in the market for a new diaper bag? They have some great bags and wallets on their site.  Interested in the flavour of the week? Purchase at www.babybot.com

Birthday Present Idea for the Weaner that has EVERYTHING!

Melissa, March 12, 2010

We were at a great birthday party on the weekend!  Lovely family, their kids have everything!  Last year I bought them a frog for their weaner’s second birthday.  Ha ha!  This year I thought a puppy would be a good idea but decided against it considering the frog never did make it to the third birthday party. Here is what I did for the weaner that no one can buy for: Bought the Built Lefty lunch bag from www.babybot.com Filled a pack of Wean Cubes up with candy: Need I say more?  After he opened the present and found the candy inside he decided he was good and didn’t need to open the other 10 presents waiting for him.  He loved it! And yes his mother is still my friend.

Flavor of the Week-Quinny Zapp Stroller

Melissa, March 8, 2010

This one was love at first site for me!  I have a running stroller that is the weaner’s main mode of transportation around our house and outside but when you live in a climate where it snows 11 ½ months out of the year (a bit of exaggeration but right now that is how it feels) you need something smaller for the mall or the airport. The Quinny Zapp is perfect for folding up and throwing in your truck to use at where ever your destination!  It folds up to a nice little 12” X 27” package and is super lite!  It has a great seat for the weaner’s to stay comfy on their stroll through the park.  What really got me was not how great the product actually works (which don’t get me wrong it is superior) it was the color!  They have named the color “Capri” and it is a beautiful kind of tealy color.  I just love it! Anyway, enough about what I love, if you are looking for some stroller love you can purchase these at www.babybot.com

Helpful List of Commercial Baby Food Jars that Do & Do Not Contain BPA in the Lid

Melissa, March 8, 2010

We all know that making our own baby food is the healthiest option there is.  That doesn’t mean that if you are in a bind you can not substitute with a commercial baby food.  Before you do this, check out this survey that was done by Health Canada to determine BPA amounts in the lids of commercially packaged baby food.  They have a table that outlines some popular choices and indicates the BPA levels in them.  Super fantastic! SEM-The Next BPA?

Melissa, March 6, 2010

We all know that BPA is not the only chemical that we must worry about contaminating our weaner’s foods.  Reports are saying that there are up to 40 chemicals that are leaching into our foods from packaging that may have harmful effects on our health.  Here is an example of just one more.  Semicarbazide aka SEM is yet another cancer causing chemical that can be found sneaking its way into baby food.  Check out this article from BBC to find out more: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/3194284.stm

Flavor of the Week-Safe Sippy

Melissa, February 22, 2010

This week Safe Sippy is taking center stage! And for all of you who already have one I am sure you know why!  As we read about the plastic water bottles taking over our landfills (and oceansL) and the BPA found in plastics I have to question why there are not more Safe Sippy’s out there! Here is a stainless steel sippy cup designed with our weaners health in mind!  Get more information and find out where to buy on Kid-Basix website: http://www.kid-basix.com/

KISS Your Kids!

Melissa, February 17, 2010

I was doing some research on the benefits of snuggling our weaners when I stumbled across this.  They provide you with a downloadable kit to store your weaners pictures and information so that if you ever need to get their information to the authorities and media you don’t have to waste valuable time searching for recent photos and racking your panicked brain trying to remember little identifiers your weaner has, like a scar above their right eye. I have already downloaded mine and created the files for both my weaners. I have their fingertips on file as well but this system is instantaneous when you would need it the most! My heart breaks for anyone who has ever been in this situation. To read more go to KISS Kids Identification Safety Software!
