Flavor of the Week-Seventh Generation

Melissa, June 3, 2011

Okay, my delinquency in posts has led the ‘Flavor of the Week’ to be the ‘Flavor of the Year’;) I was introduced to Seventh Generation nearly 3 years ago when my youngest weaner was born. She had some bladder/kidney problems and the ‘traditional’ diapering options seemed to be adding to the bacterial problems! I was chatting with one of the amazing workers at a local organic grocer about the problems and she pulled out the Seventh Generation wipes. My weaner had been so prone to diaper rashes because of her kidney problems that I would bathe her after every diaper change just to avoid having to use wipes on her sensitive behind. After 2 days of using Seventh Generation wipes I never saw another diaper rash on her again! Miracle? Nope, Seventh Gen had claimed that “these gentle wipes clean baby’s bottom with plant-derived ingredients; no alcohol, synthetic cleaners, dyes or fragrances. Whitened without chemicals containing chlorine, these soft cloth wipes are a safe and soft choice to keep your baby’s skin pure and clean” AND they weren’t lying!! After all of this you can imagine that my logical next step was to start using their diapers too! Of course their diapers are free of chlorine, fragrances, latex and petroleum-based lotions. I just can’t wrap my brain around the decision to add these things to something that hugs are sensitive little babies every minute of every day for at least the first year of their life! Seventh Generation saved not only my weaner’s bum but also her kidneys! We found out after that if we would have subjected her to the ‘other’ name brand diapers she would have had more serious kidney damage that wouldn’t have been as easily resolved with her surgery because the bacterial growth would have created far more scarring on her kidneys. Yes, I really love Seventh Generation😉 And so when I saw this awesome company’s prize pack on the 10 000 kids online auction I knew I had to win it! HUGE thank you to Seventh Generation for donating a beautiful prize pack! I will only use Seventh Generation cleaning products for the rest of my life! Thanks for caring about our health and the environment. Three cheers for 7th Gen! NOW I would like to share these products with you!! Want to win a Seventh Generation prize pack so you can love them as much as me? All you have to do is ‘like’ our facebook post and you will be entered to win an awesome basket full of products (including the diapers and wipes!) The contest closes at midnight on June 7th. Good luck mamas!!

Recipe of the Week- Baby Stir Fry!I

Melissa, April 20, 2011

I love recipes that can be made for baby as well as the rest of the family! This one shot recipe can be taken out before any sauces are added in to make a wholesome supper for your weaner! Baby Stir Fry 10 carrots 5 mushrooms 1/2 onion ½ head broccoli 1 bunch asparagus 1 tsp extra virgin olive oil Chop up all your veggies and mushrooms, ensure you break the asparagus and discard the woody part. Add a small amount of oil to a stir-fry pan and turn heat on medium high Add the onions, asparagus, broccoli and carrots and cook on medium high for  5 minutes. Add the mushrooms to the pan and cook for an additional 5-10 minutes until everything is very soft. Dice into small pieces or puree in a food processor or blender adding breast milk or water as needed. Pour into Wean Cubes. Remember to check the temperature before serving. Store the leftovers in the fridge for 3 days or the freezer for 3 months.

Baby Apps!! Man, I love my iPhone;)

Melissa, April 5, 2011

Its such an ‘app’ world! I use an app to do everything from distance my runs (which has been easy lately…0 km), wake me up, give me recipes and even check in with airlines and hotels! It is amazing how many apps there are that help us all out! Recently I was visiting a friend and I noticed that she always kept her iPhone really close when she was doing all the new tasks mamas do. I finally asked what she was doing and I was stunned to see that she had her adorable baby’s entire little life stored in her iphone! Gone are the days you have to put pins on your bra to remind you what side you nursed on last;) For $4.99 you can time, track, andremember every detail of your weaner to be’s life! I remember my big notebook that I would use to log all my weaner’s bowel movements, feeds, sleeps, baths (yes Renee, I did bathe them:), and extras (like when they got Vitamin D). I also remember leaving that book behind at several locations that never were disclosed and starting again. Eventually (about a week in) I gave up on my very good efforts and winged it which always came back to bit me when they had their emerg visits or checkups. I was equally as delinquent at keeping their ‘first year’ books up to date. Again, I would write down all of our special moments on little sticky notes only to lose them all in the end. Iwould take pictures and not get the film developed and I lost that nice little immunization book the nurse gave me about 1 week after I got it (each time…). This Total Baby App has been rated the #1 app to do all of the above!! You can take a picture at your weaner’s first hockey game and add it into their diary and then video their first steps and keep it all in one safe place. Besides the diary I think my favorite feature is the growth tracking. You can track, chart and email your baby’s growth!  My goodness I wish I had my iphone 9 years ago!! Still waiting on your baby to join the world? I was thrilled to see that What to Expect has offered a FREE App for all you pregnant mamas! Although all pregnancies are nowhere near to being the same I absolutely loved finding out what could be happening with my  growing baby every week! I also used the book to help decide what was ‘normal’ and what required attention. I used to phone my husband from work and ask him to go get the book and tell me if the symptom I was having was okay or not. I think he would have really appreciated this one;) Another circle I have been running in lately is that of the potty training parent. It is so funny how much conversation this can bring to a table of adults […]

Recipe of the Week-Fruit Salad

Melissa, March 22, 2011

Fruit Salad I always recommend introducing fruit after you have introduced a wide variety of vegetables.  Fruit is a sweet treat for children. When my weaners want a ‘treat’ they often ask for a strawberry or a bowl of blueberries because that is what we have taught them to like.  This fruit salad is a great dessert or afternoon snack for anyone! It tastes great and its jam packed with antioxidants! Ingredients 1 cantaloupe 1-cup grapes 1-cup blueberries Peel the grapes. Yes, I realize this sounds tedious but just do a small slice down the middle and pull of the skins. Cut your cantaloupe in half and take out the seeds Scoop out the tasty goodness (meat of cantaloupe) and add to your grapes. Add the blueberries. Dice into small pieces or puree in a food processor or blender adding breast milk or water as needed. Pour into Wean Cubes. Store the leftovers in the fridge for 3 days or the freezer for 6 months. Thanks to Philippe Photography for the photos. He endured many hours in my crazy house to get this shot!

Pre Oscar Adventure Part 2…Celebs & WG!

Melissa, March 17, 2011

I don’t travel often. And I  leave my family even less. I had the opportunity to attend Jayneoni Moore’s Pre Oscar Gifting Suite in February and I couldn’t turn it down! After the fabulous time at the Golden Globes suite I decided that the marketing power of these events was worth travelling for (who are we kidding, I just wanted to go back to LA!) As some of you may noticed I have been auditioning for a spot on the Babybot team for over a year. Not only do I love this store to pieces the owners are amazing friends of mine so I thought maybe I could bring them down to LA with me. As you can imagine it wasn’t very hard to convince them to join me! Babybot’s owners are also designers so I thought I would take advantage of that and let them have full control over our shared booth design and take all the credit for it later.  I am still blown away by our booth! It was incredible and they only bossed me around until 2 in the morning the day I got to LA to set up;) At least I was good for something! After building walls and setting up displays and placing products our booth looked amazing! The event began on Friday morning and one of the first celebs to walk through the door was Martyn LeNoble, Christina Applegate’s fiancée and new baby daddy! It was great chatting with him and hearing about their new baby girl! With a great start to the event I was equally as pleased with every celeberty I had the opportunity of giving Wean Cubes to. Not only is Kelly Rutherford my favorite tv mama she is also now one of my favorite real life mamas! She had her absolutely adorable daughter, Helena in tow! Yes, that is the absolutely beautiful Antonio Sabato Jr. and his equally beautiful baby mama, Cheryl. Can’t wait to see this baby;) I knew Autumn Reeser from Entourage and her recent successful show, No Ordinary Family. Her and her husband Jesse are expecting their first baby and her glow was contagious! Sandwiched in between two absolutely beautiful women! Minnie Driver & Kathleen Robertson are both mamas to toddlers too! Karl Yune, from Memoirs of a Geisha joined the gifting suite with his extremely radiant wife. I can’t wait for his new movie, Real Steel to hit the big screen, it sounds awesome!! Stay tuned for more from the gifting suite….

Add some LOVE into that baby food!

Melissa, March 10, 2011

Recently I had the opportunity to speak with Louisa, a reporter for Ming Pao Newspaper and a very interesting topic came up! We were talking about positive energy, eating habits and overall positive living when she mentioned she had recently published an article about how water reacts to the physical and emotional situations we surround it in. The absolutey brilliant Masaru Emoto of Japan has done numerous studies on how our thoughts can transform the world around us, including water! I love hearing about how love and positive energy are ale to bring change to our lives and this story has really made me think about being in the kitchen and the energy I bring to it. I like to start all my research like anyone else…this is the intro I got straight from the pages of Wikipedia😉 Masaru Emoto (江本 勝 Emoto Masaru?, born July 22, 1943) is a Japanese author and entrepreneur known for his claim that if human speech or thoughts are directed at water droplets before they are frozen, images of the resulting water crystals will be “beautiful” or “ugly” depending upon whether the words or thoughts were positive or negative. Emoto claims this can be achieved through prayer, music or by attaching written words to a container of water. You know when your mama makes her signature spaghetti dish and you try a million times to replicate it and it never tastes right? Or you order it at the restraunt and it comes no where close to even being in the same category as your mom’s homemade food? We were chatting about how this could possibly be because your mom adds a special ingredient that no one else in the world could possibly add, her love for you!! If what we say to a puddle of water could possibly change the aesthetics of it then imagine what a huge dose of love could do for everything in our surroundings! Meal creation in my house is often a chore. I watch the clock and dread having to drop what I am doing and go figure out what the heck I can throw together and feed my family.  In the end I always have something for the table and we share that absolutely precious family time together but I never begin it with a positive attitude. So, my new experiment is to absolutely LOVE preparing dinner and presenting it to my family.  I think I need some sort of a journal to record my moods during this time and my family’s reaction when it is time to eat it. Looking back I think that they compliment my meals more on the days that I enjoy preparing the food. Check back in with me soon and I will let you know what I come up with;) For all you mamas making baby food I really want some of you to try this!! Do something fun while you are preparing a big batch of food for your loveable baby! Listen to music you […]

Pre Oscar Party Adventure..Part 1

Melissa, March 6, 2011

My favorite part of getting out of my office/toy room is meeting other companies in this business! There were some familiar faces at the event as well as some new ones! Hello gorgeous super mama! I was more starstruck meeting the owner and maker of the absolutely beautiful Mod Mom toy boxes! I have to say this is one unassuming mama! She has 2 kids and while playing the part of mother amazingly she spends countless hours in her shop hand crafting modern, designer toy boxes! I can’t wait to get one (for each room in my house!). You can buy both Mod Mom Furniture and Wean Cubes from our friends over at Babybot! Huge shout out to Kiersten and any other lovely mamas from da’ Bank! www.modmomfurniture.com One of the things that made Babybot so unique is that they actually brought in some of their suppliers reps! I was so thrilled to work with Ricardo from Bugaboo and Jose from Beco!! Its Jose in the picture above but we made sure to put the Bugaboos in to represent Ricardo! I will find a good one of him for Part 2. We all know I am a huge fan of both companies and it was absolutely fabulous to meet them! More about my babybot field trips will come!! Leap Frog-I can’t thank those ladies enough for putting up with my over tired bubbly personality on set up night! The ladies patiently waited until ridiculous hours in the night to receive their products. As if it wasn’t hard enough to sit and watch us set up hundreds of boxes they also were gracious enough to tease us all night;) I love them both, if you are reading-HI!! http://shop.leapfrog.com/leapfrog/ Some familiar faces were the glowing smiles from Puppy & Bean! My goodness, these women are lovely! They offer shirts branded with some great sayings. Talia’s personal fave ‘Spirited Child’. I’ll say! http://puppyandbean.com/ Little Divas Tutu also offered an extremely friendly familiar face! Melissa is absolutey beautiful and I was so excited to see her again! My daughters have been having so many tutu parties since the last time I was so excited that she gave me another one to mix it up a bit;) http://littledivatutus.com/ I love seeing mamas working hard-especially with their babies in the carrier helping them! Toe Blooms was there with babies in tow (I think the babies were the biggest celeb draw;) Great products, amazing company! http://www.toeblooms.com/ I Like Meredith. I also like the I Like Book.  This book gets my commercial-As a mom and a teacher this product grabs my attention! One of my next posts is about how positive energy makes such a change in everything we do, teaching this from a young age gives our munchkins the tools they need to choose the right paths and ‘like’ themselves as well as others! http://theilikebook.com/how-it-works Another beautiful mama- Oh Baby Organic Skincare was at the event with her beautiful little girl! http://www.ohbabyorganicskincare.com/ As a Canadian mama I […]

Wean Green visits the set of Breakfast Television Calgary

Melissa, February 22, 2011

I have never felt more comfortable setting up for a media interview! I would like to extend an extremely sincere thank you to the crew over at BT Calgary for hosting me this morning! Sandra’s emails make me laugh, although I am not much of a hugger Glen’s hugs are much appreciated, camera crew (sorry I am not that great with names!) you are both awesome and Tara-I don’t think BT could have picked a sweeter host for the morning show! I was worried I was going to be half asleep but the energy in the room was enough to wake anyone up (and not be grouchy about it;) Take a peek at the video, tell me you love my new top and try cooking your baby’s cereal from scratch! Recipe of the Week-Your Green Baby’s Apple & Spice

Melissa, February 15, 2011

Another delicious recipe courtesy of Kim Corrigan-Oliver, the beautiful mama behind Your Green Baby. Kim always post great ideas, tips and of course recipes on her site! For any of you that have a fast growing, hungry toddler make sure you check out Kim’s Snacking on the Go with your Toddler post! Apple & Spice Apples are a favourite among babies – I have not met a baby who didn’t like apples.  This puree takes apples one step further to apple pie filling – yes it is that good.  It combines apples with raisins and cinnamon to create the most delicious puree and I am sure your baby will love it. Apple Surprise 9 to 12 months 4 apples, peeled, cored and chopped ¼ cup organic raisins ¼ to ½ tsp ground cinnamon Steam apples and raisins until tender apples are tender, approximately 15 to 20 minutes. Transfer to a bowl, add cinnamon and puree to desired consistency with a hand blender or blender.
