Happy Holidays

We have been super busy building snowmen and eating cookies! I can’t wait to share some news, recipes and cool products next week! I will be in touch soon! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday too!!

Flavor of the Week-Mally Bibs!

I am hoping that my sister in law doesn’t have time to read our Flavor of the Week this week:) I am writing about a present  that I have gifted often, used myself and am sending to the youngest weaner in our family for Christmas, the awesome MALLY BIB! I never could understand why mamas even bothered to put a cloth bib on a baby, its not like it is any easier to wash a bib than it is to wash an under shirt. I have changed my stubborn ways. I love Mally Bibs. They use a magnet to stay on, instead of the dreaded ‘hair caught in the tie’ strings.  Their designs will rock any babies world and they are reversible! These bibs don’t have to go into the dishwasher to get clean, you can just wipe them down with a cloth or even throw it in the dish water!! In all my Christmas craziness I am happy to see gifts that are useful and practical.  Every weaner needs a beautiful bib! The best thing about these bibs is that you don’t need extras for the days you don’t do the laundry.  You can just wash this quickly after each meal and wear it for the next. Genius? Yes, I think so! To personalize your gift Mally will customize them for you too! I am never on the ball for things like this but will do it for the next baby!! Have a product that you think would be a great Flavor of the Week, contact me, melissa@weangreen.com!

Flavor of the Week-This Little Piggy’s House!!

Still looking for the PERFECT Christmas gift?? I am in LOVE with This Little Piggy’s House Cardboard Playhouses! These houses are the perfect size for your busy toddler.  You can get them in colorable white, brown kraft or even have them hand painted by a Californian artist! My little artists will be coloring the white house on Christmas day! Or if you are really creative see if you can make a gingerbread house like the one pictured above!! “Playhouse walls are constructed with 275 pound corrugated cardboard to withstand huffs and puffs from big bad wolves” and are made with recycled materials in California!! These beautiful playhouses were designed by an Architect dad who saw a need for eco friendly toys and filled it! Calgary friends, you can see one of these beauties set up on display at Monkey Shines Books in Marda Loop! To order in Canada contact Grassy Knees, hello@grassyknees.ca to find out what retailer is closest to you! Ordering from the US? Go straight to the source! you can order from This Little Piggy’s House website! Have a product that you think would be a great Flavor of the Week, contact me, melissa@weangreen.com!

Flavor of the Week-ROCKABYE BABY

I love my weaners and I would do anything for them EXCEPT listen to kids music all day (Bobs & Lolo isn’t officially kids music in our house)!! Luckily for them, I ran into ROCKABYE BABY in Las Vegas at the ABC Kids Expo and they handed me a couple of discs!! My personal favorite, none other than the Green Day renditions!!! Babies love it, toddlers love it, school aged kids love it and best of all I LOVE IT!! I love playing guess the song in the car with the lullabies.  I also love how 9 times out of 10 it puts the baby to sleep! Not a Green Day fan (mom), then you can browse from their huge selection including The Beatles, Bon Jovi (who doesn’t love Bon Jovi??), Elvis, Pearl Jam and the one that I am ordering next, No Doubt!!!! Is this not the coolest company you have seen? With gift certificates, a huge selection of music, apparel and free gift wrapping, ROCKABYE BABY would make the perfect gift for even the smallest music lovers in your life! Go to their store today!! Game On! Snow Rumble Competition!

Wondering why I haven’t returned any calls or emails for the past 4 days? I had to practice my SnowRumble: Babybot vs. Monster skills so I could put out a little challenge to all of you lovelies! Although my competetive nature said “BOOYAHHH” to everyone who missed their chance at the 5% promo code for successfully whooping the first level of SnowRumble I was feeling a bit sad for those who wanted to purchase Wean Cubes for 5% off:( This is my cheap attempt at an apology:) I contacted Babybot and told them that I would give any player who beat me at the game 5% off Wean Cubes from their store. They have stepped up to the challenge and matched my discount. Yes that’s right folks, beat me at SnowRumble and you will be rewarded 10% off Wean Cubes until December 17th. Even better? Flavor of the Week-Monster Factory’s Todd Movember Challenge

I have always had a secret crush on Todd. As a firm believer in Toddism I find this awkward, rockin’ monster a little…ummm…well….. cute?! Todd is a Monster Factory creation that makes me laugh every time  I look at him. Although Barbie will have nothing to do with him, my two little weaners love giving Todd a squeeze every once in a while (I think it is a sympathy squeeze, but nonetheless, he is loved in our house). As a true gentleman Todd is always thinking of creative ways to make the world a better place. This month Todd has signed up for Movember and his rather trying journey to grow a mustache has been documented in his very own Mo Space. Watch Todd take command of Movember in this short Monster Factory clip. Todd’s team released a statement on his behalf stating that, “Prostate cancer is the number one cancer affecting men – 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with it, but like most cancers, it’s highly curable if caught in the early stages. Movember is a moustache growing charity event held during November each year that raises funds and awareness for men’s health. The funds raised through Movember’s Canadian campaign go directly to Prostate Cancer Canada, which enables them to fund vital research that will lead to better screening tests and treatment options, and to run support services for men surviving prostate cancer.” Although I don’t doubt my ability to grow a stach as beautiful as Tood’s I have decided to continue waxing and instead just support Todd’s So for all of those of you that have decided to wax or shave this Movember, head on over to Movember Canada and give your support on Todd’s page!!!! Although I am not normally a jealous person I don’t know if I want to share Todd. You can however purchase your own Monster (there is an awesome line) over at Monster Factory!

Guest Recipe of the Week! Pear, Parsnip & Ginger Puree

Thank you so much to Kim Corrigan-Oliver from Your Green Baby for sharing her amazing recipe! Check out her website for tips on raising Your Green Baby! This is so delicious you will be steaming pears and parsnips to make an adult version of this puree. Hint – it makes a wonderful soup. I am a big believer in tickling tiny taste buds on a regular basis; you have to keep those little taste buds on their toes and by exposing your baby to a variety of tastes now may spell success at avoiding the picky eating stage. At nine months of age I challenge parents to add herbs and spices to their baby’s purees, it is such a wonderful way to tickle tiny taste buds and also provide an amazing amount of minerals, vitamins and phytochemicals – yes herbs and spices are full of nutrition. Pear, Parsnip and Ginger Puree 9 to 12 months 2 medium parsnips, peeled and chopped 3 medium pears, peeled, cored and chopped ¼ tsp ginger Steam parsnips for 15 to 20 minutes, add pears and steam another 5 to 10 minutes. Remove from heat, let cool slightly then puree with hand blender or in blender.  Add ginger and mix well. Nutritional Information Parsnips are a good source of potassium, fiber, vitamin C, vitamin K, folate, and manganese.  Pears provide a good source of vitamin C, fiber, vitamin A, niacin and potassium.  Ginger provides potassium, magnesium, copper, manganese and vitamin B6. Hope your little ones enjoy it! Thank you so much to Kim from Your Green Baby for sharing her amazing recipe!

Flavor of the Week-Lex Modern Art

While in Vegas I was lucky enough to have a booth beside Melanie, the sweet owner of Lex Modern.  Her art is rockin’! I brought the piece pictured above home for my oldest weaner.  It comes in an array of colors and you can even get it personalized!! Melanie designs all the art (with the help of her sweet little boy and hubby) and each piece of art is UV-printed and hand stretched in Lex Modern Studios. Although the rockstar picture is perfect for my oldest, the three below are going to be going in my office! Although I know Melanie signed up awesome retailers at the ABC Kids Expo I am not sure where they all are, check out their online store: http://www.lexmodern.com/ Have a product that you think would be a great Flavor of the Week, contact me, melissa@weangreen.com!

Flavor of the Week-MD Moms Products!

Remember my post about the Babybot Stroller Event? There is something I didn’t tell you about that event.  That was the day I got hooked on an awesome baby skincare line…Hello MD Moms!  At the Babybot Stroller Event there was a change area that was completely stocked with MD Moms products including the Baby Silk Cleansing Towels.  There is a reason they are named, Baby Silk!! These are actually softer than my silk pillow case, I AM IN LOVE!!! The funniest thing about all of this is that I discovered these AFTER my youngest weaner was potty trained! I wish she would have had the luxury to have her bum wiped with these babies daily (is this reason enough to have baby #3?) The next thing in their incredible line that I need to point out is the reason I have been promoting this company to every pregnant mama I know.  They have SAFE sunscreen for weaners under 6 months old! That is right mamas, there is finally a solution to go along with the ‘keep them out of the sun’ rule! Luckily my weaners are not too old for this one and they have had the pleasure of completely covering their bodies in this yummy smelling sunscreen:) Okay, this ‘silky liquid powder’ is exactly as it sounds. It is powdery but it is liquid enough that you aren’t going to be inhaling it when you douse that babies little bum.  It is incredible! I was watching parents at the stroller event, and they would try it on their fingers first (far away from their weaners) and then call their spouse over and do the ol’ “have you seen this, it is soo soft!” Then and only then would the baby finally get to feel what their mamas were talking about! Silky smooth, just like their bum. I am not done. I have a rather funny story to insert here.  My youngest weaner’s birthday was September 21st. We had some company over for her birthday dinner and everyone had brought gifts.  She opened up her gifts in a rather unusual cool and collected state and when she got to my gift (MD Mom’s Hair and Body Wash) she went crazy! She was so excited!! She started running over to everyone showing them her ‘sooope’ and had to test it out immediately.  She loves it!! The craziest thing was this was the day that another law suit was brought against a very well known baby soap company and one of their retailers.  It is such a relief to know that their are moms AND doctors out there that are finding innovative ways to protect our weaners from the chemicals that large companies have been exposing them to for years! Which brings me to something extremely important! Their products are all free of phthalates, lanolin, petroleum, mineral oil and known skin irritants. Make sure you check out the ingredients section on their website! Just in case you can’t tell how much I […]

Eat More Dirt…

Written by: Kevin (AKA the weaners’ daddy) I am an urbanized farm boy. Coming from the Peace Country in Northern Alberta I never knew what ‘typical’ produce was supposed to look like… turns out it is uniform shape, uniform colour and blemish free – according to major grocery chains anyways. Not on the farm. (aside: did you know those mini carrot packages are actually made up of machined down giant carrots… or so says my pa). On the farm, garden vegetables have bumps, bruises, and come in all sizes. I once dug up a potato that looked like Ross Perot, big ears and all. To the point, sitting in the garden as a child I would routinely pull carrots, parsnips, turnips and pick cucumbers, beans, peas etc, etc with no intentions of ridding them of the majority of the earthen materials they are covered with prior to partaking in their savory unaltered goodness. This was not due to my inherent good intentions of healthy living. However, it turns out that I and most farm kids are on to something when it comes to how much dirt we grow up ingesting. As a matter of fact, it even has a scientific name – Geophagy (though the definition suggests some sort of compulsion, I in particular was more driven by laziness – not wanting to waste time returning to the house to ‘properly’ wash the produce prior to partaking of my bounty). Research suggests the clays in soil are particularly good at plant toxin removal. Minerals naturally found in soil are routinely taken as supplement pills (especially during pregnancy as the body’s demand increases). It is also said that soil, again referring back to the clay portion of the material, is capable of building up the immune system…. bodies of evidence even suggest that farm children (like me!) have fewer incidents of allergies and auto-immune diseases than our city dwelling brethren. With the discussions that have ensued, my wife’s ingrained pessimism has subsided and I now have free reign to have our two girls reduce our previously instilled cleanliness mantra…. at least when it comes to vegetables straight from Grandpa’s garden. Moral of the story… dirt is not to be as feared – Eat more dirt.

Flavor of the Week- Olli and Lime Bedding

A little piece of awesomeness that we found in Las Vegas is this gorgeous crib/junior bedding line by Olli and Lime! We were lucky enough to be placed 2 booths down from the owners of Olli and Lime at the ABC Kids Expo! Our pregnant sales beauty had already put a bit of a bug in our ear in regards to this fabulous bedding so we had all been secretly stalking the company for months.  Poor chaps.  At least we represented the crazy Canadians well:) So our pregnant beauty walked away with everyone’ s favorite, the George bedding. One of the fabulous things about the George line is that it is unisex! The bedding is so gender neutral that my friend who scored this bedding set doesn’t even know if she is having a boy or girl but has a nursery planned that fits either! Gone are the days of pinks and blues! Jolly Good (right Andy)? Next up is this ‘cheeky’ collection of Charlie Bedding.  And yes, it is the same size as George, don’t you love how it goes from the crib to the bed?? The versatility of the bedding is one of its most endearing features (next to design). I love products that grow with your kids! Billie is just like George except Olli and Lime (or just their beautiful designer)  have found a way to make orange appealing! Yes, I have said it, I like the orange designs:) As any of you know, orange is not my favorite color, in fact it doesn’t even make the top 100 list BUT I am absolutely loving the Billie collection! For some reason the orange is working and it all works for me here! I am pretty sure it is the super soft materials that make it all work but nonetheless, I LOVE this orange! I know I said that the George was my favorite but now that I am looking at pictures again I think the Egg is my new favorite (with the exception of the George that will be in my newest niece/nephew’s crib). In fact, I am going to order this today for my GIRL! Yes, thats right folks, I am going to put BLUE bedding into my GIRL’S bedroom! Call me crazy (or cheeky depending on where you are calling me from). There are so many more absolutely awesome products that Olli and Lime have to offer! Check out their website to see what you are missing! http://www.olliandlime.com/usa/shop.html. If you really want to get into the shenanigans that took place in Las Vegas, check out  http://olliandlimeblog.com/. Trying to buy some Olli and Lime close to home? Check out www.babybot.com!! My list of Flavors has grown tremendously since the ABC Kids Expo last week in Las Vegas. I can’t wait to share over the next couple of months! Have a product that you think would be a great Flavor of the Week, contact me, melissa@weangreen.com!

Not So Scary Halloween Treats

Halloween has snuck up on me this year!  Normally I try to not give out individually wrapped, sugar filled candy.  As a teacher I have stuck to fun pencils.  This year I decided to look for something different.  I would still like to give something that is environmentally friendly and is a useful item for kids. My favourite treat from the good ol’ days was the homemade popcorn balls!  Unfortunately, some smucks ruined the homemade treat trend by contaminating it with bad stuff.  Not being able to create your own treats is a bummer but I have found some good options. You can consider buying some organic candy for the trick or treaters. I found some lollipops at our local organic grocer.  If you are in an area that does not offer organic candy I found a great site online that has some really cute Halloween lollipops http://www.organiccandy.com/index.html. If it’s not broke…  I found these absolutely perfect pencils from O’BON.  They are made out of recycled paper which means no trees were harmed just to make these pencils! They have stunning, non toxic animal prints on each pencil.  Check them out at: http://www.myobon.com/product/104010200 I had a great neighbour as a kid that would give my sister and me each $20.  We were so excited!  It is not in my budget to hand out a wad of cash to each child that comes to my door but I can definitely give them some change.  Why not give out a penny, nickel, dime or quarter?  $$ has more uses than any treat you can come up with! Happy Halloween and Safe Trick or Treating!

Team Wean Green Ran for the Cure Again!

What a fantastic morning and what a FANTASTIC team!! I would like to thank everyone for coming!! Stevie, Kenzie, Heather, Tanis, Kristy, 2 Rocky Mountain Kids,  Holly, Macy, Rayne, Talia and the team members we adopted along the way, Amanda, Sammy and Monica all rocked the run!
